His Eminence Metropolitan Paul of Memphis


His Eminence Paul Lyngris Elder Archbishop of Memphis was born in 1920 in Kafr-el-Zayat in Egypt. He is a graduate of the Theological Faculty of the University of Athens. He was ordained a deacon in 1940 and a priest in 1952. He served as parish priest and as Vicar General in Harare, Zimbabwe during the years 1954 – 1968. In 1968 he was elected Archbishop of Johannesburg and Pretoria. He organized his Archdiocese, building holy churches and he developed noteworthy religious, social and philanthfopic works. After the passing of Pope and Patriarch Parthenios he was elected as Deputy (Vicar) of the throne. Apart from Greek he speaks Arabic, English and French.
