Former
Bishop Timothy of Detroit Dies Suddenly in Athens Hospital

December 14, 1998 New York, NY - His Eminence Archbishop Spyridon, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, today announced that His Grace Bishop Timothy, retired bishop of the Diocese of Detroit, had died Friday, Dec. 11th, in an Athens hospital following complications from asthma. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 3:00 p.m. at the Kimisis Tis Theootokou Church in Kaiseriani (Athens) with burial in the Kaisieriani Cemetery. Bishop Damaskinos of Diavleias of the Archdiocese of Athens will preside, assisted by several hierarchs and clergy. Representing the Ecumenical Patriarch will be Bishop Isidoros of Tralles. Bishop Timothy (Negrepontis) was consecrated as Bishop of Pamphilos on January 20th, 1974 at Holy Cross Chapel, Brookline, MA and as auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Iakovos, was assigned to serve the Diocese of South America with headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 1978 he succeeded Bishop Iakovos as Bishop of the Seventh District of Detroit and in 1979 was enthroned as Bishop of the Diocese of Detroit. He retired to Greece in 1995. GREEK
