Death of the Former Archbishop of Cyprus, Mgr Chrysostomos I

At noon today, Mgr Chrysostomos I, the former Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus, passed away. Born in 1927 in Statos (near Paphos) in Cyprus, he became a monk in 1940. After completing his theological studies in Athens, he returned to Cyprus in 1961, where both as a preacher and professor in secondary education. In 1968, he was elected as titular Bishop of Constantia and in 1971 Metropolitan of Paphos. In November 1977, he was elected, unanimously, Archbishop of Cyprus, succeding Archbishop Makarios III. In 2002, he came down with Alzheimer's disease. He remained on the archiepiscopal throne until 2006, without, however, being able to exercise his functions, due to his illness. On November 5, 2006, the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus elected Mgr Chrysostomos III, Metropolitan of Paphos, as his successor. May his memory be eternal!
