Recollection of Metropolitan Bazyli

 

Metropolitan Bazyli died on the 11th of February 1998, at the age 84 years. He was buried at the orthodox cemetery of Wola district, in Warsaw. Archbishop Sawa, the then Head of Bialystok-Gdansk Diocese, presided over the requiem.

The deceased Metropolitan Bazyli — Wlodzimierz Doroszkiewicz was born 15.03.1914, in Cisy village on Bialystok's voivodeship. He finished the Orthodox Spiritual Seminary in Wilno. The Second World War stopped his higher theological studies. He comp leted them graduating from the Spiritual Academy with the title M.A. of theology, in Zagorsk (presently Siergijew Posad) in 1960. He obtained his first ordination in 1937, and in 1938 he received priest ordination. He led his spiritual work in the following parishes: Lyskow, Hornostajewicze near Wolkowysk, Swislocz, Michalowo, Grodek. Having taken holy orders in 1960, he obtained bishop ordination, and became Metropolitan's suffragan, with the title of Bishop of Bielsk. In 1962 he became Bishop of Wroclaw-Szczecin Diocese. There he stayed till his election for Metropolitan's Throne. In Wroclaw-Szczecin Diocese he turned out to be responsible organizer among orthodox people, that appeared in these areas as a result of "Wisla" action. After the death of Metropolitan Stefan, he was appointed to the post of Metropolitan of Warsaw and All-Poland. He held the Metropolitan post since 1970 until dead, which follow after long and serious illness on 11.02.1998. Thanks his efforts was restituted two dioceses: Przemysl-Nowy Sacz Diocese and Lublin-Chelm Diocese and also was created the Orthodox Ordinariate of the Polish Army. In addition with Metropolitan's blessing the School of Writing (Painting) Icons in Bielsk Podlaski and the Psalmist's Study in Hajnowka have been formed. Metropolitan participated actively in the allword activity of the Orthodox Church, and also active worked in Polish Ecumenical Council and World Church Council.
